Scrambled, fried or … whipped into beer? While it may seem unconventional way to serve eggs, a historic Hanoi cafe is surprising and delighting patrons with its unique frothy egg beer cocktail, offering a bold twist that defies traditional breakfast fare and showcases creative culinary innovation.
The staple menu item at Giang Cafe in Hanoi’s pulsating Old Quarter is made with cold beer topped with creamy egg yolks whipped with sugar and a touch of butter to boost richness.
What is Egg Beer?
Egg beer is an unusual beverage that combines beer with a raw or cooked egg, often enjoyed for its rich, creamy texture and flavor.
Owner Nguyen Chi Hoa says he came up with the recipe in 1999, curious how the combination of eggs and beer might turn out.
“I made egg beer just for myself … I thought it was good, so I decided to give it a try to see if anyone agreed,” he says.
His innovative approach has driven soaring demand for their unique Vietnamese coffee topped with sweetened egg froth, prompting his daughter to crack over 1,000 eggs daily to meet the popularity.
This distinctive beverage, the egg beer is now a staple in cafes across Hanoi, has captivated both locals and tourists alike, showcasing a delicious blend of tradition and creativity that continues to grow in popularity.
