The name ‘Stout’ wasn’t originally about colour, but about bragging rights. The first time anyone bothered to write down the word ‘stout’ in reference to a beer was in 1677. They weren’t commenting on its rich, roasty notes; they were simply declaring, ‘Behold! This brew is mighty strong!’ It’s the original beer flex, centuries before craft beer hipsters existed.
