We were lucky enough to have a tasting experience with the winemaker himself and this have to have been the best visit to a wine farm I have ever had. The passion that he has for his wine allied to his knowledge and the brilliant wines made for an very enjoyable and memorable trip. All of the wine was of a high standard, the best being the Cabernet Franc and, surprisingly, the Malbec.

“Plaisir de Merle a.k.a. Pleasure of the Black Bird” brings to mind the feel of being invited to a very important meeting with the President or Royal family…

That being said, you are welcomed and made to feel right at home from the moment you arrive. Apart from the wines, which is a force to be reckoned with on its own, you have the helpful assistance of Jackie van Rensburg.

Jackie has been on the Estate for 32 years, actually living on the Estate with her family. The farm was signed over in 1694 from Simon van der Stel himself and one feels the history when visiting. Jackie is an absolute asset to this experience and her knowledge of the wines as well as the wine making procedures will keep you hooked, with interesting facts of the usage of egg whites to bring the reds to the quality we receive in the bottle.

The flagship of Distell allows a traditional experience with the Cape Dutch styled architecture to back it up. If you want to feel a little more important and drink Great wine then pop on by, 6 wines for R20 as well as wine pairing packages, you cant go wrong!!!…. ;p

Stunning farm with a very picturesque setting! We were greeted immediately by Emarencia who is extremely pleasant and vibrant, she knows a lot about the wines and the history of the farm itself. A choice of wine tastings is given which is a nice option, the options included the standard wine tasting comprising of 6 wines for R30. A food tasting where a little bit of food is served with 4 different wines to explain how the food influences the taste, the chocolate tasting where you enjoy chocolates with a selection of their wines and lastly the export wine tasting. Wines are of a stunning quality albeit it slightly pricey but in my opinion worth it. Chardonnay is exceptional and Merlot is one of the best I have had with a velvety finish. I would highly recommend this farm and the tastings.

We ended or day of winetasting here, and were treating like royalty! The wine were fantastic, and we had a relaxed tasting on lawn, hosted by Emmeratia, who was very friendly and well informed about Plaisir de Merle. Definately worth a visit!

We were welcomed by a very friendly lady called Jackie at the entrance. The tasting room was stylishly decorated with some antique and some modern pieces which gave the big room a classical yet funky feel. A bit of music would have added to the vibe though.

Jackie explained the tasting options and we could choice between a normal tasting or the flavour sensation tasting for R50. They also have a chocolate and wine tasting, but Jackie informed us that “someone” ate all the chocolates that’s suppose to pair with one of the wines. We opted for the flavour sensation and thoroughly enjoyed the tasting.

The wines were presented in beautiful long stem glasses and I enjoyed the Chardonnay and the Sauvignon Blanc at R85 each. The Merlot was not bad either and the Shiraz was great, but I felt that it was slightly overpriced at R220 for what you get. I would have been sold at R150.

It was a pleasant experience and everyone in our group enjoyed it.

Unique tasting experience – flavour sensation tasting: combining the wine with small portions of food. Jackie very friendly and knows her farm very well. Intimate surrounds for a Distell farm. Wines ok, but a tad over priced.

Revisited on 28.08.2010 and have to retract my previous comment. Jackie treated us very well, until she got distracted by more clients. Wines are good, but don’t offer as much as they cost. Had a taste sensation tasting which matched food flavours with each wine tasted. Amusing.

People should look pas the fact that this place is owned by a huge corporate (Distell) and appreciate the great wines they make. Consistent quality, the cab is the stand-out wine.

This is an excellent farm with the quality of the wines coming through with all of their wines. The farm is a small boutique farm which is not swamped by tourists. The hostess was well informed and friendly. I thought that the prices were reasonable given the excellent quality of the wines
