Interesting tasting experience, even for a non brandy lover. Try the chocolate and brandy pairing.
The brandy and chocolate tasting can turn your world around if you’re not a brandy drinker. They really do put them into the world-class category of fine brandy. Best to do the brandy and chocolate tasting inside in the summer months unless you want to lick your chocolate from the plate.
Another amazing time with Van Ryn’s. Lovely Oudemesster 18 year old Brandy
The brandy and chocolate tasting is excellent, I can recommend it to anyone even if brandy is not you’re thing
I was lucky enough to experience this yesterday – it’s an excellent pairing, and a real eye (and nose and throat) opener for fine brandies. Definitely a Swallow, not a Spit!
Wow! What an experience. We loved the pairing of chocolate and brandy. We actually sat there having a great time for two hours after the tasting (and this was our second visit in three years’ time). Go on.. visit them!
An absolutely awesome experience from the moment you look upon the architecture and gardens all the way to the end when you are feeling a little inebriated.
I recommend doing the full tour, you learn so much!
Enjoy the really comfy wingbacks and the inspiring conversations…… WOW!!!!
OK, so they are not really a wine estate, but they still use grapes and seeing that I have visited 198 wine estates already, I thought a change would be as good as a holiday and OMG it was!
The most friendly and professional service that I’ve ever came across. As we walked in we were welcomed by Helmuth Kisting who offered us some bandy liqueur. What a cool guy. He escorted us to the tasting room and informed us how their tastings work. I don’t drink brandy, so everything was really new and exciting. While Helmuth prepared our tasting Rayner van Wyk kept us company with some interesting brandy in’s and out’s.
We opted for the Chocolate and Brandy tasting and I would highly recommend everyone to do it. Helmuth first gave us the one-on-one of brandy tasting, which is very different from a wine tasting. We started of with the 12 year Van Ryn ‘s Brandy. First you have to warm the brandy with some hand/body heat and then gently sniff the brandy from a far distance. As your nose gets use to the smell, you go closer, closer and then almost sip nothing. You then indulge in some yum yum Cappuccino flavoured chocolate, take another sip, mix it up and enjoy every bit of the tasting experience.
Next up was the 15 year old Brandy, but before we moved on we had to cleanse our pallet with some filter coffee, which worked really well. The 15 year old brandy was paired with a Orange and Cinnamon chocolate. Personally I HATE orange chocolates, but this one went down extremely well and the tasting sensation reminded me of carrot cake.
Last up was the big pappa, the 20 year old, rated best Brandy in the World at the International Wine and Spirit Awards twice in a row. After I tasted it I’m 100% sure that it’s going to take the 2009 Award as well. I really did not know that brandy can taste this good. I’m gonna buy myself a bottle for Christmas for sure!
My 199 visit was one that I will remember forever. Hulmeth and Rayner, you guys rock! So professional and yet relaxed. Next time I’ll do the cellar tour and another tasting. See you before Christmas
O yes and a 10/10 for Van Ryn’s!
