Van Loveren’s new tasting room is incredible! The shady outside area makes for the perfect place to chill on a lazy afternoon. The service is super friendly and their new wine pairing offerings are creative and interactive. They even offer a kiddies and non-alcoholic grape juice pairing for those who’s not so keen on wine. We also popped in at the the restaurant, Christina’s for lunch. The menu is straight forward and offers a variety of thin-based pizzas, burgers and steak. Prices are also reasonable at R60 – R70 for a pizza. On Sunday they have live music which adds to the charm. Don’t forget to take a stroll though the garden. Every tree represents a special occasion in the family’s history or that of South Africa. Something pretty special. It’s still one of my favourite wine estates and the new tasting room makes a day at Van Loveren even more enjoyable.

Great to see Mia – formerly of De Grendel – here. She makes a huge difference to how a tasting experience should be. Wines are so so, but still worth the visit.

I don’t have a chance to go to Van Loveren. I love to drink wine and surely it would satisfy me. Thanks for your great post.

you can see people come here to enjoy themselves…the vibe is very laid-back, the booze is cheap and the owner walks around handing out free vetkoek to everyone…where else but in the south african platteland!

Great vibe! Indoors and outdoors in the garden. We sat outdoors. Staff was super friendly and let you have a go with the bottles but are always close by to answer questions. Cant say much for the wines, but did enjoy the sweetcorn fritters that went around. Will visit in the summer to try the bubblies.

Huge wine selection our host took bottles out and layed them out on the table and told us to have fun.
the setting is nothing to go home singing about. And the cellar tour was great but once you in it you realize that the wonderfull individuality that we all crave in wines will not be a reality.
All the wines are average but the pricing gets a thumbs up.
Yes you have to visit

This is obviously an industry and they are doing great things to promote SA. Wine is mediocre but the experience won’t kill anybody.

Have not had the pleasure to visit the farm, but did meet Van Loveren wines at Cafedomancy in Alberton with the JBU team. Excellent wines, excellent company. Thank you Robert.

Interestingly brilliant! I think the experience is awesome – sitting on plastic chairs at plastic tables under the trees sounds rather boring and cheap but I won’t stop there and talk you out of the visit you were planning.
There are enough wines to suit any taste bud or preference. Go with an open mind and good company. Take your time and taste as much as you can!
Eventually you will start to realise why everyone at some point in there life has bought and drunk a bottle VL wines.

Beautiful farm with the best wines in the area! The Four Cousins and Papillon Sparkling wines are delightful, especially the Four Cousins White sparkler. All in all the best farm to enjoy the wine quality, the scenery, a very cute hostess and get a feel for why Van Loveren is so popular.

I’ve been to Van Loveren 2 years ago and I can still remember the awesome time that we had there. One weekend, 6 of us decided to explore the Robertson wine route. On our arrival at Van Loveren we were informed that they where closed for a wedding and that we can’t buy any wine, but that we were more than welcome to do a tasting. The guy took out a few bottles (including a full bottle of bubbly) and gave us the key to the storage room where they keep the wine that they have on tasting. He looked at the boys and said: “Don’t mess up my place, have a good time and leave the key under the mat.”………. Are you for real dude?

They have such a big selection that we did not know where to start, but we helped ourself to some fabulous wines and enjoyed one of our most memorable tasting experiences ever!

Recently we stayed the weekend at Pat Busch Nature Reserve, just outside of Robertson.
Naturally Saturday, wine tasting was the order of the day..
Being the gorgeous day that is was, we decided to target wine farms where you could sit outside and enjoy the scenery, warmth and of course good wine !

We arrived at Van Loveren Wine Farm, but were told that they were actually closed due to a wedding taking place that day.
However, we were offered to help ourselves to their wine and sit outside in their beautiful garden, sheltered by magnificent trees.
We were made to feel so at home and thoroughly contented. We tried of their various red, whites and champagnes…They clearly not only judge their wines really well, but also people….
I had been feeling in somewhat of a sweet, festive mood.Upon noting this i was offered their delicious champagne..truly delightful !

I can quite safely say that discovering these amazing people and their delightful and most alluring wines, was certainly the hilight of our weekend. Also tasting and trying wines the way were able to relax and enjoy them taught me more about wines and the pleasures of them. Usually wine tasting is quite fast paced or you have to many wines to try in short breaks, that a name is forgotten.
On this occassion, i not only remembered the names, but discovered a few new, favourite pleasures !

It was quite clear upon meeting these innovative people, how warm and great energy they have…
A article i discovered..
“A perfect example of the Retief family’s commitment and loyalty was illustrated during a flood that hit the Van Loveren cellar in March 2003. The Breede River that runs through the farm rose to its highest level in 70 years and the maturation cellar was 1,6 metres under water. The ensuing chaos was calmly handled by the whole family and within two weeks the entire operation was up and running again and back to normal three months later.”

Much respect and thank you for your amazing hospitality !
We will most certainly come again !
