The only thing about this winery that impressed me at all, was the view and the quirky decor in the tasting room (all the chickens…). Most of the wines were oxidised, the tasting room lady had some parrot-rhymes that she recited without any knowledge behind what she was saying (pronounced Merlot as Mer-lit…) and they really could do with more signage along the way once you get to their property. Don’t think I’ll go back.

Finally managed to taste some wines. Sadly the Chardonnay I’d been trying to taste was sold out and as such none was available for tasting. Tried the Sauvignon Blanc even although I’m not a SB drinker, it was absolutely amazing. A beautiful light fruity wine that would go well with many dishes. Red blends were the best in my opinion. This vineyard is all about quality and not quantity so the wines are produced in limited quantities. I put my name down for 6 Chardonnay and the list was already almost full… R200 a bottle is not cheap either but what a wine from the previous time I had tasted it. Well worth it for the views and pleasant hostess.

The flagship Chardonnay is impressive – it’s easy to taste why previous vintages have won so many awards – but be prepared to buy a bottle if you want to taste it. Their regular range of whites are all very enjoyable. I was also very surprised at the quality of the rosé, which was told was produced as an experiment using left-over grapes. The staff are friendly, informative and attentive without being in your face.

Wonderful views, wonderful Chardonnay & if you play your cards right you just may coax a bottle of an older vintage from the very engaging tasting room manageress.

Sadly we arrived just as the tasting closed and as such missed an opportunity. The drive is well off the beaten track but offers spectacular views as you travel down long single land tar roads up to the top of the hill where the farm is situated. From experience the Uva Mira Chardonnay is one of the finest available!

Uva Mira is rightly one of the highest rated wineries in the country! We arrived on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and were greeted friendly at the door and welcomed to the cozy tasting room. Close to the fireplace and next to lovely scenting protea flowers, we took a seat in comfy armchairs in our own private corner by the window. Although cloudy, the view was fantastic and I can only imagine what it must look like on a clear day. To make it perfect, we ordered a cheese platter for R100 which was loaded with some absolutely amazing goats cheese, camembert and figs that paired well with the wines.

The tasting was conducted absolutely professionally. Their Sauvignon Blanc grapes are sourced from both low and high altitude vines giving the wine a subtle balance between fragrant tropical fruit and the more classical SB green pepper, fresh acidity taste – which alone can put some strain on your poephole – as Neil Pendock puts it. But this one has the right balance and has become my favourite SB of all times. Still affordable at R75.

The reds are amazing, too, with the Vineyard Selection Shiraz clearly standing out, but with R200 a bit pricey, but worth it if you have that kind of spending money. Same price is the Chardonnay, which I’ve heard great things about but it is unfortunately not available for tasting.

A clear must-visit!

This place is amazing, awesome views as far as Cape Point and Robben Island with a sunset over Table Mountain you just can’t beat, and I haven’t even started on the wines.

The tasting room walls are covered in accolades and when you taste the wines you will see exactly why. Elegant, robust and balanced each wine shows a true expression of terroir from the highest vineyards in Stellenbosch. The Chard is obvioulsy the stand out, but the Flagship red is incredible too. I could live in this tasting room.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Incredible views from that height. Beautiful tasting room with plenty of space and different areas to hang out in. Tasting room staff were very helpful and friendly.

Chenin Blanc 2008 is amazing, big price tag at R200 but most definitely worth it. The 2009 out the barrel tastes promising.

We will be returning soon.

Uva Mira is ‘n juweel – ‘n uitsonderlike steen hoog geset teen die hange van die Helderberg. Weer eens, as dit nie vir die Helderberg Wynfees was nie, sou ons nooit dié wynplaas besoek het nie!

Uva Mira vertaal as ‘tros druiwe’ in Spaans.

Noooo… Damn u Madame de Wyn!
Unfortunately I didn’t get to taste the Chardonnay either, nor do I have a bottle at home to open one day. Never mind, I’m hoping to get a bottle before the 1012 vintage.
This winery has one of the most spectacular views you’ll ever see. With vineyards between 460m and 600m above sea level (won’t be too far off), so you can see a great deal. Audrey, the wineyard worker turned tasting lady supremo, tells me you can see Robben Island from the tasting room on a clear day.
The wines were great, with a few people wanting a second heelping of the flagship red. But the atmosphere was even better. Audrey made us all feel welcome and the sunroom was a great place to relax and enjoy your glass of wine.
For those of you who like sundowners, Audrey hosts these from the 1st Friday in November, but call and book in advance.
Enjoy and happy slurping.

I am LEGEND! I probably got the last bottle of their Chardonnay! Yes, I did pay R175 for it. No I did not tasted it. After all the good things I’ve heard about this wine, I could not let this oppertunity pass. So I broke my two golden rules concerning wine purchasing: Never by a bottle that cost more than R150 (cause I can’t afford it) and never buy a wine you haven’t tasted. Not to fear! Audrey assured me”money back guarantee.”

The other wines on tasting were all FAB. I enjoyed the2006 Red Blend a lot, but to much for my pocket @R200.

JP was a great host and Audrey a LEGEND for selling that last bottle to me! Great views, awesome company and fantastic wines.
