Tell us about your experience at Under Oaks
Easy drinking wine & best pizzas in Paarl!
Wonderful reception both in tasting room and the eatery. Wine was good and the food, under the oaks, was nisely presented
Whne we get there we were met by a lady called Sue who also happens to be the sales Manager she was loading wine into her car and told us to wait in tasting room and would help us once she’s ready. whne she arrived in tasting room she told us that there was no one to do the tasting and that she knew very little about the wine.
aftre a little bit of negotiating she then gave us a tasting and had immence knowledge about the wine. The wine were worth the negotiating and so is the setting.
still wondering why she tried to get rid of US
Just a quick note: There is credit card facilities at the tasting room, but not at the bistro.
Thanks to martin and madame for taking me along. It was my third time at under oaks, and the experience just gets better and better. Great great red wines, brilliant setting, especially summer months for sitting outside in the sun, under the big oak trees. I hear the food is amazing, thanks to annellize for the chocolate cake. very yummee!!!! Cant wait to go again!!!!!!!
The second stop of the day in Paarl was Under Oaks. Not an impressive drive down to the main building, but once you get out of your car, walk through a narrow pass and onto the ‘square, under the big oak’ you feel like Alice in Wonderland entering the magical kingdom of a rustic fairy tale which overlooks the farms where horse, cow and sheep peacefully share the same field.
To get to the tasting room, like Alice, you have to pass through various rooms which includes their locally renowned Bistro, an Art Gallery of works from local artist, another room and then you get to the intimate tasting room where we were greeted by Jolene, our Lady of Vino. She didn’t know much about the wines or the process but was a shy delight.
We tasted the four wines on offer, which included an easy and fresh Sauv Blanc 2004, a nice braai wine Chardonnay 2008, a lovely and smooth Cabernet 2004 which doesn’t grab the throat but cradles it and lastly a super Shiraz 2005 which will be perfect with something hot and spicy. It made my tongue slip into a trans of delight.
On our way out we had a slice of their very popular and famous cheesecake and this is a definite must-have if you ever visit the farm.
The next stop Seidelberg Wine Estate
Wow! What a great find! It really felt as if we were on a farm. The big trees and the old buildings created a lot of character and the wine that we found there was an added bonus.
A friendly, but shy Jolene conducted our tasting and a while later we met Annelize. She is the owner of the Under Oaks Bistro, which forms part of the tasting facility. Annelize showed us a personal poem that they received from none other than the famous Clint Eastwood. Clint enjoyed some great wine and a scrumptious lunch at Under Oaks a while back. He had such a great experience there, that he wrote a poem about it that read as follow:
Our cups runneth over
We were not surprised
We heard such good things
But forgot to bring the wives
Now that we’re leaving
Our bellies fill to bust
We hope to arrive safely
For in God we trust
-Clint Eastwood
Spot on Clint! We tried some of the cheesecake and it was out of this world!
Their wine was just as good and extremely well priced. My favourites: The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (R52)and the 2005 Shiraz (R63) Unfortunately they don’t have credit card facilities and I was short on cash, so I could not invest in some wine. Will return soon though to stock up, cause it’s real good!
Very nice venue, under oak trees, light lunches available, only about 5 wines to taste, but very nice.
