Tell us about your experience at The Stables
It does’nt exist anymore – owners (?) have run off leaving a mess and mega debts
Interesting place – especially the winery !
@Wynand Laubscher – Farm was registered in 2005 and Kzn was then gazetted as a wine of origin then. We had our first kzn wine of origin certified in July 2006. Which was our Pinotage Clariet 2006
Hi Jan Langenhoven i just want to inform you of the miss understanding you have regarding our wines not being a kzn wine. I would like you to come up to THE STABLES WINE ESTATE, and have a look at it yourself i must also mention we had our first kzn certified wine made and produced in kzn in 2005 thats the same year the the stables wine estate had there farm registered, one more piece of information the back label states wine or origin kzn if its a kzn wine and wine of origin cape town if its grown and bottled in cpt.
Kind regards hopefully some information has being cleared up !
What a lot of bull. Wines made in the Cape and sold as Natal wines. Read the back label.
Got there on a soggy day in Kwazulu Natal and after the hour and half drive we where eager to taste.
Having tasted the wines 2 years ago when i was lucky enough to be given a case i was pleasantly surprised to see how much they had improved over the years. Our host Wynand who is also assistant wine maker just guided us to tasting room and left a very polite but less enthusiastic girl (Mbali) to do the tasting. She did nothing but pour wines and did not have much info or knowledge with regards to tasting and wine making.
The wines fortunately where above average and the Chenin is beautiful and so are the 2 reds. worth the drive and the ambience is as simple as the farm.
I didn’t know what to expect when I visited The Stables. From what I can remember there wasn’t much place for tasting inside. We sat outside, which might not be so nice on a cold day. However, we were there on a lovely day, so they might have a plan for chilly occasions. Reasonably good music was playing in the background.
Now on to the wines…
The white wines were all nice, especially the KZN range sauvignon blanc. The pinotage was quite also nice but maybe a little bit low in alcohol, at 12%. But that’s personal preference.
This is a very uniquely situated winery which can be a whole trip on its own when in KZN. The prices for the wines are good and the staff member who helped us was informative, friendly and all smiles.
For those of you thinking of going there… Just watch the BIG dogs.
ENJOY!
