The tasting room staff was absolutely fabulous in my book. Probably the best customer service i have ever experienced at a wine tasting room. The wines were simply mind blowing and the people were professional enough to know their wines. The ambience was also very calm and relaxing. Steenberg estate gets 2 thumbs up in my book.

Maybe I was just too hyped to visit Steenberg. We had tasted the Most Amazing Shiraz and the Cape Town Food Fair, so I expected a lot, and as a result, was quite disappointed. The restaurant was awesome and the whole ambience of the place was great. It was the tasting that was the let down. The tasting room staff were snooty and many of the wines were out of stock…perhaps I should go back on another day and give this flagship estate another go?

Tried the Steenberg at Bistro 1682. Probably the most expensive burger I’ve tried to date at R105 but well worth it. They only make 10 of these on a Friday and you have to be quick to book as these beefy bites are extremely popular. What makes it so expensive? Possibly the Foie gras on top which makes it extremely rich and decadent. If you are a fan of burgers then these one’s are well worth a try. Also loved the garlic salted chips. YUMMY!

When it’s cold, light your fire in your tasting room!! Also, although we had a fairly good time, we had children with us and when we asked for coldrinks for the children we were told we could only get from the restaurant, but we couldn’t do our tasting in the restaurant.
Otherwise the champagne was excellent and the setting beautiful!

Stayed here the previous evening and was our first wine tasting of the morning. We are served by the tasting room mangeress, who could not have been more accommodating. Love the stories about their wine names and the Steenberg Estate. Very modern tasting room with greta views up the mountain. Tasted all their range. Stand outs for me were the rose MCC and their premium SB. Also liked the nobilio (spp?)

My visit to Steenberg on Sunday was an excellent introduction to Cape wines. The wine tasting was presented to us by Graham, who was very knowledgeable and informative. He gave us an excellent history of the farm, and blended in wonderful stories behind the names of the wines. Although I am not a connoisseur, I was impressed by his ability to teach me how to best appreciate the wines. I really enjoyed all the wines, but particularly the MCC which was quite delicious – so much so that I had to buy some. We loved the atmosphere, the vistas and the sculptures in the gardens. I can thoroughly recommend the experience, and do ask for Graham as he was certainly most charming.

Be it either your first or the final stop on the Constantia Wine Route, Steenberg leaves a lasting impression. I was mightily impressed by the friendly reception we received as we entered the tasting room (and what better way to start a tasting than with the 1682 Blanc de Blanc!) The farm offers great service without being too formal. The tasted the new HMS range of which the HMS Sphynx (a lightly wooded Chard) as my favourite between the two. I’ll be back again soon, that Nebbiolo is calling my name!

Love the unique glam Steenberg brings to the wonderful Constantia Wine Route!
Professional staff, not unfriendly, but not quite as bubbly as their MCC.
- Unusual but yummy Sauv Blanc 08, and the special price on at the moment is tempting!
- Delish Shiraz 08.
- Best Merlot I’ve had in a long while.
- Klein Steenberg Bordeaux unbalanced – too acidic, not enough fruit.
- Catharina balanced, but lacking substance. Almost watery.
OK, I’m biased about Bordeauxs. Constantia Glen has completely spoiled me.
And I have a very trainee palate.
Ja no well fine.

I finally made my way down the long and winding M3 to pop in at Steenberg for a night of Operampanje (Opera and Champagne) and must admit that my expectation of this winefarm was exponentially exceeded. Well done because it takes quite a lot to tickle me! Great service paired with a fantastic setting, or settings depending on where you decide to sit, will make any occasion special. If it is just a quick drop-in to sample some of their wines or if you’re planning to make a day of it, this is the place to be.

The highlights in the wines are the Magna carta (if you can get it) and in slightly lesser vintages the little brother of it, the Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon. A nice big selection of wines to choose from – 2 terrific MCC’s also a standout.

So the official opening of Steenberg’s new tasting room and Bistro is on Friday the 13th. I got to see this spectacular place yesterday already and boy is it hot or what? All the hard work that went into building the new tasting room was worth every drop of sweat. The new look definitely puts them in the top spot of hotness in the Constantia valley.

We were very fortunate to taste the Klein Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2009, which will only be released on Friday the 13th. A definite buy for the summer at only R42. We tasted their whole premium range (which is for free) and also got a sip of the Catharina 2002 from their Ultra Premium collection. Super delicious at R180 a bottle.

Looking forward to try out the Bistro which will serve mostly breakfast and tapa’s. Definitely the new hot spot for summer! Have a look at the photo gallery for a sneak preview.

Visited Steenberg during a quick and sneaky lunch hour. Good thing is that work is 500m’s away, so a colleague and I went to the farm for their complementary tasting.

It’s another cold and rainy day in Cape Town (no surprises there), so the embracing fire in the tasting room was quite literally a warm welcome.

If I remember correctly, the complimentary tasting consisted of 6 of their wide variety of wines. (Unfortunately not any of the flag ship wines, but they were generally all very good :) )

My personal favorites were the Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and ofcourse the Catharina red blend [which i enjoyed the most].

We didn’t have enough time to visit the restaurant nor the spa, but i would highly recommend anyone to go experience and taste a bit of old Cape wine heritage.

I work in Steenberg Office Park and visited Steenberg during my lunch break. It is a reminder of how wine is an integral part of Cape Town and how this part of the Cape is where wine was first produced. Every day I drive past this wine farm on my way to work and this is one of the most historic farms in the Western Cape. The wine farm is surrounded by beauty. We enjoyed a tasting in a room heated by a fire of vines. There is a variety of wines from Sparkling and I particularly enjoyed the CATHARINA wine and hearing the story of this German woman who originally owned the farm and about her five husbands. We looked at the menu of the restaurant which looked really appealing but unfortunately had to go back to work.

Not to be missed either, (if you can still manage to get a booking that is) are the monthly themed tastings presented by wine ponses like Karl Lambour, Miles Mossap, Boets Nel, JD Pretorious and more. So far we have had evenings on Nebbiolo, Old Whites, Bubbley, Shiraz, Riesling to name a view. It’s a great forum.

So this is the oldest farm in South Africa. (According to Steenberg that is)Please take note though, it’s not the oldest wine farm, it’s the oldest farm. It was also the first piece of land that was given to a woman in South Africa by Mr. Simon van der Stel. I’ve been to Steenberg before and bought some good wine there. I must say, I enjoyed it even more this time around.

Our tasting was done by Lida van Heerden, who was absolutely FAB! She was so good, that she made their cheapest wine appear to be worth a million moelas.

I like the fresh look that they’ve got going. They bring something different to the Constantia region. I took a quick peak at the refurbished Catharina’s Restaurant. Job well done I would say!
