Tell us about your experience at Overgaauw Estate
2010 sauvignon blanc is a stunner!
Upon entry I was greeted with the bare belly of the resident staffy and a resonant hello from the kind lady serving. Upon exit I was laden with several bottles of the rose – staggering value – and the lingering aftertaste of their new cabernet sauvignon which was unlucky enough to suffer a little from the heat of the day (everything everywhere did on this particular day) but which kept up Overgaauw’s tradition of making excellent accessible wines at decent prices. I cannot recommend Overgaauw enough for a good, simple, friendly wine-tasting experience, one which gains infinite extra points for being knowledgeable without once resorting to aloofness or snobbery.
We had very good service from the clued-up tasting room assistant. Nice to be able to taste some unusual grape varieties – Sylvaner as a single varietal, Touriga Nacional in red blend.
Arived within the last half hour before the tasting room was closing the young man gave us very good serv ice and knowledge of there wines. Very helpfull and informativ e.
One of the true classic Stellenbosch wine farms. Wines are very old world in style which I like and you wont easily find a family that is more passionate about wine making
Lots of history and atmosphere – this feels like old school wine making… The Sylvaner is fabulous.
Two words… Tria Corda… and 2 more… Cabernet Sauvignon and one last one … Port. Great place, bit old world old school in feel, but the wines are incredible.
A very beautiful tasting center with friendly staff increased my attention towards this vineyard, all the wines really impressed me, noticeably the the whites we’re well done!!
though the reds did get some attention from me!!
a piece of decoration in the vineyard that was indeed interesting was the bridal photos of the family weddings!!
overall it’s a trip i’d like to make again soon!
Bless my tongue with the fragrance of good wines and wrap me in a blanket of family humble opulence (or so it seems): Intimate farm with intimate wines. You have no choice but to get involved.
The collection of Bridal Photos along the wall behind the tasting area compliments their collection of wines available.
The Cab Sauv harasses the taste buds in a circus of flavours.
The star variety in my crown of wines is a Merlot and we were told that this farm was the first to bottle Merlot in SA in the 1900’s, so they score a bonus swallow!! Then there’s the matriarch oddyssy of Tria Corda sensassions . . .
The farm itself is gorgeous! This is a definite stop should you ever decide to travel through this area!

My first visit to Overgaauw was at the end of 2007 and I don’t know what took me so long to go back. It’s an awesome wine estate. It’s one of those estates where you can buy an excellent bottle of wine for under R80. I opened a bottle of their Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 to impress a friend the other night, and oh my goodness, did it work!
I like the classic look that they’ve got going. It makes them appear mysterious and interesting. The host, Niell van Velden, was amazing. It was probably one of my most informative tastings to date.
They are the first wine estate in South Africa to bottle Merlot as a single variety in 1982. They are also the only wine estate in the country that makes Sylvaner, which is a German cultivar. I enjoyed their Touriga Nacional/Cabernet Sauvignon blend. They were the first farm to plant Touriga (a Portuguise cultivar) in South Africa, as well as the first to use it in port. Their flagship wine is the Tria Corda, which means 3 hearts in Latin and it’s great.
2009 will be their 100th harvest and I wish them all the best. See you soon for another stock up.
Tria Corda to Niell!
I agree
Not many farms where you like all the wines!
