Absolute bliss! Oude Denneboom has managed in a very short while to accumulate a number of awards, amongst them being the overall winner of the Paarl Shiraz Single Vineyard Trophy for their Shiraz 2006, a Silver Medal at the SWISS International Airline Wine Awards for their Oude Denneboom Steenbok 2007 (a blend of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier), as well as 4 Stars in the May issue of WINE Magazine for their Eland 2007 ( a blend of Shiraz, Grenache Noir and Mourvedre) – a typical Rhone-style blend, which is now virtually sold out.
My experience on Oude Denneboom farm was one of genuine true Olde World Style and charm, and the winemaker Hannes Aucamp and owner Niel de Waal has been nothing but hospitable, going out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay in their 4 Star Self Catering Cottage in the middle of the private game reserve on the farm. People from as far as Australia are booking months in advance to visit Oude Denneboom, and one can understand why when you visit this gem of Voor Paardeberg. With Hannes’ focus on Rhone-style varieties and blends, working with Grenache, Mourvedre, Rousanne and Marsanne culitvars, amongst others, one can expect great things from this little boutique winery on the outskirts of Paarl. And the proof is in the drinking! Not overly extracted or wooded, the natural fruit flavours of each cultivar is accentuated and complimented by 2nd and 3d fill French Oak and good acidity provides the backbone of all their wines, so no flabbiness around here!
Keep up the good work and please increase the production of your Steenbok and Eland….we need more good wines like these!
