Mont Destin

We were welcomed by a super friendly Samatha Burgin, the owner and winemaker at Mount Destin. She made us feel right at home and explained to us how the tasting would work. Due to the fact that they are a boutique winery, one has to purchase each bottle that you would like to taste. Any left-overs are yours to take home with you.

We started of with the Chenin Blanc 2009 at R65 and even my friend that hates Chenin liked this wine. During the tasting Samantha shared interesting stories, their love for music and their passion for wine. The are very good friends with the band Fools Garden. Such good friends they came out to South Africa to play a gig on the farm for Valentines day.

We tasted 2 more wines and decided to call it quits when the next wine on offering costed R450. The Destiny Shiraz 2006 is apparently so good, that Celine Dion finished all 10 bottles in Beluga on night at R1400 a bottle and insisted on more. My word, I would have loved to see Celine drunk.

The highlight of our tasting experience was when Samantha presented us with the most expensive bottle of wine in the country…..wait for it….wait for it…..R18 000. Why so expensive? There’s an 1 CARROT DIAMOND set in platinum and attached with wax on the outside of the bottle. (refer to photos) Only 6 bottles were produced and behind the diamond, in the bottle, you will find the Shiraz 2006. You can even be picky and choose between a Diamond and a Gold Coin. I’ll take the diamond thanks!

If the diamonds does not appeal to you, why not spoil that someone special and treat them to a Pinotage bath experience. Here you will find the only Pinotage bath in the country and it’s surrounded by the vineyards. It’s apparently great for your skin and puts the fire right back into any relationship.

We had one fantastic experience and received personal, one on one attention from Samantha. A definite must visit!
