Tell us about your experience at Hazendal
We visited a rather quiet Hazendal on Saturday. It was our hostess Lee-ann’s first day on the job so she was a bit nervous but she was charming and did a very good job. She was open to explanations from us which I am sure she found useful and informative. We found out that the farm is actually owned by a Russian and that they have Russian vodka and a Russian museum in the cellar. Time didn’t allow us to have a look but we will next time. My favourite white was the wooded Chenin Blanc and my favourite red was the Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon. The straw wine (not usually for tasting) was delicious as well.
Outstanding Chenin Blanc and MCC. The rest of the wines are nothing more than average. Be sure to visit the Plaas teater for some live music on a Friday or Saturday. The laid back vibe is awesome, the place has a rustic real feel to it, and the booze is dirt cheap! The tasting room has a nice Russian feel to it, the owners are Russian, and if you are lucky you may even be presented with a shot of Moscow’s finest…vodka that is…
Enjoyed the white wines.
I don’t like the wines except for the Last Straw, from chenin air-dried grapes. Arriving at about 10h00 on a weekday, the umbrellas were closed, patio chairs were not put out neatly and the tasting room door was closed. If I were a tourist I would have assumed that the place was closed and would have driven away.
Nice cozy environment with nice host. Quality of the wines did not really impress though
Hazendal is one of those old and classic wine farms in the Bottelary Hills. It’s a perfect venue for weddings and I absolutely loved the big old fireplace. Hazendal has a unique blend of Russian inspiration and Cape Dutch style. A tour through the Marvol Museum featuring a fascinating insight into Russian culture with authentic icons and artwork. The restaurant is worth a visit!
One to remember for some Sunday lunch.
