Tell us about your experience at De Grendel
I am a fan of this winery. The view is lovely, the service is good and the wine is great!! We enjoyed a cheese platter on the stoep while admiring the view and enjoying our wine tasting. I can’t wait for them to open the restaurant!! You can see my ful review on http://westerncapewineries.blogspot.com/2011/09/de-grendel.html. This is one of my favourite wineries in Durbanville!!!
They seemed seriously understaffed today. They probably give great tastings. Wines were interesting!
Stunning location. Great wines.
Stuuning views, even better bubbly!!!
Well done to the tasting room chap who coped all on his own despite our late arrivals, tricksy questions and desperately wanting to go watch rugby.
And thank you to said tasting room chap for parting with two precious, very nice De Grendel glasses so we could continue our lovely afternoon on the grass, overlooking Table Mountain, the dam and the vines with our just-purchased bottles. You made our day.
The wines: all very lovely and well-priced, though perhaps the Rubaiyat could be a teensy tad cheaper. That said, it’s divine, as are the Shiraz and both Sauvignon Blancs.
Looking forward to coming back!
This whole range of wines is great great great. Friendly service and knowledgable people. My favourite is ….um….wow, hard to choose, Pinot Noir or Bubbly or White blend…oh, give me one of each
Great dedicated tasting room, long list of wines to try and a high standard throughout. Reasonable prices (apart from the Rubaiyat which I just don’t get).
Been here more often than I can recall, the only winery that can do Shiraz and MCC in a fashion where I would spend money on it.
With its easy proximity to Cape Town, and the spectacular view of Table Mountain from the terrace, I’d have expected De Grendel to be packed – especially as our visit was during the busy pre-Christmas season. However the morning of our visit was fairly quiet (perhaps too many people hitting the malls, and not wine farms?)
The wines up for tasting were excellent – I’m not a fan of Sav Blanc or Merlot, but I’d have comfortable drank the former, and I’m considering buying the latter – lovely, elegant, complex and medium bodied. Even the other-half liked the MCC, and he’s not a fan of bubblies!
Now, if only they’d put that dairy of theirs to good use and offer up visitors a few cheeses; they’ll have to beat the tourists off with a stick!
I visit her on a fairly regular basis. I am sorry that Mia is leaving them, I always enjoyed her tastings. LOVE their Cap Classique!!!
It’s quite an effort to get here, through some of the ugliest suroundings any winery has to offer, but do not be deceived. The vista from the terrace makes the city every bit as far away as it feels and puts you bang in the mood for a sip.
How fortunate then, that they have a list and quality of offering to match. All served at good temperature – which seems to be a challenge to many wineries – all backed up by a friendly assistant who clearly enjoys her work and identifies which wines will tickle your fancy even to the extent of warning you off one or two and expressing surprise if you turn one or two own. There is nothing like being intelligently challenged on your own ideas when you are looking for good wine. The rose is a good find for those who like their roses strong-tasting and the pinot noir is surprisingly delicate considering its colour. Visiting at the end of a tasting day with a woolly palate would be a waste of De Grendel’s qualities – make this winery an early port of call on a day out.
I have always been a big fan..great shiraz and (even though I do not like the cultivar) great Merlot 2005. Watch out for the Pinot noir, and the soup and bread pairing is something that we behind the boerewors curtain have been longing for
Arrived on a cold winter afternoon just before closing so staff were not really in mood to Wow us, but non the less were polite and friendly, wines were good, what you would expect from DG
This must be the best wine farm in the vicinity. Beautiful views, friendly and well-educated staff and some of the best wines ever tasted. And the wine is FANTASTIC. A wide variety with the Koetshuis being my personal favourite. Do not discount their reds though. Can’t wait for the release of the MCC!
One of the best tasting venues in the Cape Town area with spectacular views of the bay and Table Mountain. Quiet and relaxed during the week. Wines are good value for money. Watch out for the Koetshuis Sauv Blanc and the Merlot.
Tastings are free, but not very informative. Do not be in a hurry, hours may pass between tastings – they are very relaxed.
One of the best views in Cape Town, off set by some of the best wine in the country. Charles Hopkins knows his stuff around a cellar, and in particular the Merlot and Shiraz is worth a look. The Winifred is an interesting Mediterranean style white blend, something unique to the Durbanville area. The tasting room itself is remarkable with few expenses spared. The one wine farm in the Durbanville area that will never disappoint.
Even though the farm is so close to the city, you get the rural feeling looking out at the fantastic view of Cape Town and Table Mountain in the distance.
The tasting room attendant, Mia, was terrific – attentive and knowledgeable.
Great tasting spoiled at the last minute by a rude tasting room staff member. Fortunately the situation was saved by excellent wine and very professional TR manager.
Fantastic 10minute drive up to the estate. I was there on a very calm friday afternoon and that just was the perfect timing. Nobody tasting except for myself and I could sit on the terrace to enjoy one of the best views I’ve seen in my life. You don’t wanna be here on a sunday afternoon as it’s a somewhat ‘commercial’ estate that can handle large crowds.
I enjoyed the normal Sauvignon Blanc and the Koetshuis very much and their MCC was a pleasant surprise (nice ripe sweet, ripe red apple notes, full flavored champagne)
The pricewinning Shiraz is a must by too in my opinion. Thick mouthfeel, dark Shiraz with warming alcohol at 14.5°.
On fridayevening you can make a reservation for the Sundowner at R110 meal included and one glass included.
Must visit off season on weekdays. I could sit outside for hours enjoying a good book and dito wine.
Go try the perfect wine for the summer, their Pinot Gris! Elegant and immense in flavour and richness! It is a MUST….
There’s been a great deal of work and effort put into De Grendel to make it a very competitive wine farm not only in the area but nationally. The staff all have good knowledge on the wines and winemaking process. The wines are good, especially the rose. The cheese platters are a little pricey, but very nice.
Very well-informed and friendly tasting-room staff. Clearly a happy operation with sound training of staff. from the patio outside the tasting room, classic view of table Mountain. Excellent wines. Well-worth repeat visiting.
I personally love the S- Blanc and Winifred and had a great experience here, the farm is so tucked away on a huge property you almost feel like you are somewhere else.
Situated more towards Plattekloof side De Grendal is quickly becoming the more commercial Wine Estate in the area. It’s a very family orientated venue complete with a jungle gym and big green lawn where the kids can run wild, while the parents indulge in the good wine. The tasting room is modern and the staff are friendly and helpful. Their white wines are delicious but a bit expensive. The red wines are well priced for the quality that you get. I can just imagine the tourist buses lining up in the parking lot.
What a tasting experience with the best view in the Durbanville wine valley! The tasting room is open till 8pm on Friday nights in the summer and Mia is an star in the tasting room!! Winifred is a must to try when you go there!
