The raining was pouring down on Easter Saturday but we were welcomed into the home of Lance Nash and made to feel at home whilst tasting his elegantly styled Shiraz and Shiraz Cab blend. He filled us in on his 30 seconds decision to change from medicine to farming and settle in South Africa and how his and his daughter Mary-Lou’s love for wine making developed. A must visit.

What a delightful tasting. We arrived early on a very cold and wet morning to be confronted by a closed gate which had a sign that read something like: ‘ Hoot for attention, or phone …’. Before I could hoot (or phone) the gate slid open and we were warmly ushered into the Nash’s family home. The tasting was led by Dr Lance N and had we not had other arrangements to visit more wineries in the area, we would probably still be sitting there talking with this engaging personality. There is a comment on the back label of their white wine which refers to a ‘madcap outfit’ and boy, does this caption fit. Superb shiraz/cab blend (70/30) really took my fancy. Would seriously suggest that you visit but be warned, have time on your hands.

Finally, a tasting room open after 6pm. Perfect when driving back from Tulbagh but not yet ready to go home! Unfortunately Mary-lou, the wine maker, was out of town, however Lance was a great replacement. We just sat, had really good wines and just had a chat. He talked about his life, alpacas, children…. etc etc with their two young dogs playing all over. Stunning views. Great tasting. Another must visit!

The term Garagiste comes to mind when you visit black Pearl but they at least have a tasting venue at th owners back yard.
Dr lance Nash the owner gave us a very intimate and relaxed tasting of 3 well thought out wines. His daughter only makes red and she does a brilliant Job of it fantastic wines and a must if you looking for exceptional quality and good prices.
