Tanagra is under newish ownership but I think they have a way to go. The reds are far too alcoholic and are quite rough on the palate.
I almost always buy JC Le Roux for special occasions, people appreciate it more than other ’boutique’ brands, I find. But my experience here was quite disappointing because the glasses weren’t cleaned properly.
The Red Hill pinot is a solid wine. I like the estate, service is always good and it’s a lively place to visit
I agree with Jacques, this is a cold and unfriendly estate. I thought the wines were over-rated too.
The 08 Domaine Pinot is a great technical wine while the other Pinot (forget its name) is a good one too, especially for the unsophisticated palate – like mine.
I love the John X Merriman and think it is one of the best red blends in SA. Really sad that the Brampton range has been discontinued – thought the OVR was great value for money. Still an old favourite, though.
I have visited countless estates and Muratie is one of the few that I return to. The ambience is truly unique and drags you back in time. Their flagship wine – Ansela van der Caab – is indeed the best of their offerings as it isn’t as heavy as other reds (esp the Cab Sav). The Melk’s range also represents good value for money.
The winemaker – Mr Gunn – is a wise old man, really enjoyed speaking to him and he has done a fantastic job converting the estate from an apple farm. Sauvignon Blanc was beautiful, crisp and well balanced. Definitely worth the trip, I’ll go back…
