Fabulous wines, beautiful farm, and a wonderful tasting with the wine maker.
This winery is open only two weekends a year; we were lucky enough to be in Hout Bay on one of the open days. Friendly family, gorgous views, and a pretty decent MCC, which is made from grapes grown on the property. The reds are pretty decent too, but made from bought-in fruit.
Super wines, very professional tasting room staff, and a lovely venue. I did a speed tasting as I had another appointment, but will definitely return to taste the full range of wines at leisure.
Lovely venue, friendly and well-informed tasting room assistant. We liked that we were offered a vertical of three vintages of Cab Sauv to taste, and two Shiraz. The olives and cheese are a nice touch too. Looking forward to visiting again in Feb/March 2013 when the new tasting room will be open.
Entry level wines, but stunning tasting room and setting.
Impressed with the wine, charming woman in the tasting room.
Beautiful new tasting room invites the views in, wines are very good. I’m a big fan of the Chenin. Well worth the longish drive into the Banghoek valley.
Loved the art in the gardens. All three wines are worth a taste, especially the delicious dry rose, but I didn’t appreciate the bull we were fed about South Hill being the only Cab Sauv in Elgin. Belfield also do Cab, and do it better.
Tasting room needs a revamp, wines ok, very good value for money olive oil.
What a wonderful place to visit! We were there on a beautiful day so sat outside in the gardeed. I tasted the Champagnes, Jan drank real beer, Chantal had a glass of MCC and Henry, our driver, had fresh orange juice. Not many farms can offer that selection, plus friendly, informative hosts. Love it, and will definitely return.
Visited during Uncorked festival. Only wines for tasting were new vintage Chocolate Block, better than I remember it, and Wolftrap white. Beautiful setting.
Lovely destination, for a meal at Madre’s Kitchen and tasting of Sir Robert Stanford wines. Very good Chenin. Cool climate wines that bode well for future development,
Wonderful MCCs and Champagnes, charming hostess.
Wonderful lunch at the Franschhoek Kitchen, look forward to many return visits for spa, fondues and wine.
Lovely view towards Table Mountain. We visited during the olive festival and the students working at the tasting had absolutely no knowledge, but were very cheerful. I think the wines are overpriced. But that said, they are made in a style that must be very popular: sweet, ripe and juicy.
We had a lovely tasting during the oyster festival. Excellent wines and friendly people.
I’m a sucker for a French-style courtyard so I liked the look of the tasting room area from the word go. It was a bit chilly inside on the first real winter’s day and no fire, but a warmly welcoming young man gave us a friendly tasting with enough information to keep us interested. i was impressed with the red wines, especially the flagship red blend.
Brave the roadworks – Topiary is worth the visit. The friendly tasting room assistant was happy to pour and chat. I like that the wines are held back a bit before release so they’re not too young to appreciate properly. MCC not available to taste, but we bought a bottle of 2009 (2008 was 5-star in Platter’s) and were not disappointed.
Lovely surprise. The owner poured for us and chatted about the farm and his wine philosophy. We tried two whites (Sauvignon B and Chenin) and two vintages of his Cabernet blend, all good food wines and reasonably priced. The bottles are hand signed, a nice touch.
Wow, what a stunning location and beautiful cellar. The organic approach is appealing but the wines are the winners. Focus is on red and all of them are delicious. Cellar door prices are a revelation – well worth the visit.
This boutique winery is making MCC – who’d have thought it? Not for tasting, unfortunately, but bought a bottle to try. Easy drinking Chenin and a great braai-style Shiraz. Pull in next time you’re on the N7 heading up the West Coast, it’s worth it.
Yet another reason to visit Calitzdorp. Impressed with the dry reds and the sweeties, and the prices!
The vast range of wines is overwhelming, especially as the tasting room assistant was not able to communicate the differences between them all. It’s not enough to say: ‘this one is stronger than that one’. Dry white wines are not the strong point and seem to dilute the focus from the reds and fortifieds. I liked the Portuguese-style dry reds and obviously the Ports.
Rustic little cellar with a small range of wines, the best being the port and muscadel. Charming, shy assistant offered lots of information about the farm and its history.
My best destination in Calitzdorp! Excellent wines, both dry and fortified sweeties. Family friendly destination with walks through the vineyards and an activity room for the kids.
