I work in Steenberg Office Park and visited Steenberg during my lunch break. It is a reminder of how wine is an integral part of Cape Town and how this part of the Cape is where wine was first produced. Every day I drive past this wine farm on my way to work and this is one of the most historic farms in the Western Cape. The wine farm is surrounded by beauty. We enjoyed a tasting in a room heated by a fire of vines. There is a variety of wines from Sparkling and I particularly enjoyed the CATHARINA wine and hearing the story of this German woman who originally owned the farm and about her five husbands. We looked at the menu of the restaurant which looked really appealing but unfortunately had to go back to work.

This is one of my favourite estates because of the history of this farm. They have presented this in a brilliant way with attention to small details that make you feel this farm has been going to hundreds of years. There are old bottles of wines with wine evaporating from the bottles, many thick spiderwebs on the ceilings and a tasting room that feels damp and cold on a hot summer’s day. On top of this the wines are really tasty.

This is one of my favourite estates as it is more than just a wine experience but also a cultural experience. The tasting room has a cozy atmosphere with the fireplace and I cannot remember the wine maker’s name but he was passing us pieces of paper with different poetry. The wines are really tasty with some real favourites and it is a warm and comfortable environment.

This is one of my favourite estates as it has so much to offer. This is a relatively new range of wines as they were previously supplying grapes to other farms. Their wines are tasty and their Brandy is one of the best South African brandies. Also there is a contemporary restaurant with new interpretations of traditional dishes. I have visited here in summer and winter and both have a great atmosphere, especially the huge fireplace. It is a good contrast to some of the other traditional farms in the area.

Good table wines but overpriced in comparison to the other wines in the area.

This was a great place to have lunch and get married with their private chapel and reception rooms. The Pinotage stood out as the favourite but the wines are overpriced.

What great experience visiting this place. As you walk in the buildings are modern in contrast to the historic surroundings. The gardens have sculptures and the tasting room is an art gallery with a grand piano. The wines are the best wines we tasted in Tulbagh. They have two red blends, each with completely different cultivars and their Shiraz was also something I could drink regularly.

All their wines are sparkling wines but this is a beautiful farm to visit. The buildings were built in the 1700s and from the tasting room you have some great views. A definite if you like bubbly and a great place to visit whoever you are…
